Marketing and Communications Graduate Assistant

North Carolina Wesleyan University is seeking a creative and motivated Marketing and Communications Graduate Assistant with a strong background in graphic design.

ELIGIBILITY:

This is a graduate assistant position that is open only to students who have completed their baccalaureate degree and are enrolled full-time in the MBA or MSSL program at North Carolina Wesleyan. Interested applicants must apply to an NCWU graduate program and be pre-registered for full-time enrollment before they will be formally considered for this position. Full-time enrollment consists of registration for at least six credits each academic semester and must begin by no later than the Fall 2025 term. Continuous enrollment in good academic standing is required to maintain this position.

Specific work schedules will be negotiated with the supervisor (Chief Engagement Officer), but they will not include more than 29 hours of employment (on average) each week.

COMPENSATION INCLUDES:

  • A graduate stipend of $500/month throughout the period of employment.
  • Remission of tuition and fees for the graduate program in which the student/graduate assistant is enrolled. Tuition remission may be used for 6-12 hours of credit each academic semester.
  • Housing on the North Carolina Wesleyan University campus in residence hall space provided for the purpose.
  • Access to North Carolina Wesleyan University facilities and services including the health center, library, and exercise spaces during their normal operating hours.
  • A board plan to the North Carolina Wesleyan University dining services during such time as those services are in operation as part of our regular meal offerings.
  • Please note: This position DOES NOT include health insurance or retirement benefits.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Marketing and Communications Graduate Assistant will provide creative and administrative support to the Marketing and Communications team as needed. This role is ideal for a graduate student with a strong interest or background in graphic design, visual communication, and marketing. The assistant will actively participate in a wide variety of marketing-related projects, contribute to creative brainstorming sessions, and help execute campaigns that enhance the University’s brand identity.

This position offers a valuable opportunity to build a design portfolio, collaborate across departments, and apply real-world marketing strategies while continuing to grow technical, organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills—including proficiency in design tools and platforms.

The list below is not intended to be all-inclusive. Additional duties, expectations, and responsibilities may be added or modified as needed to meet the University’s needs.

  • Create/edit digital and print marketing materials, such as flyers, social media graphics, posters, and signage.
  • Support planning and design needs for marketing newsletter, campus events, academic programs, student initiatives, and/or recruitment campaigns.
  • Assist with the development and production of marketing videos and advertisements.
  • Assist in the supervision of work study students and/or interns on creative projects.
  • Engage in website and social media maintenance, editing, and updates.
  • Ensure consistency with the University’s visual identity and branding guidelines across all creative outputs.
  • Contribute to team meetings and brainstorming sessions with design insight and creative ideas.
  • Proofread and revise designs and documents for grammar, clarity, and visual accuracy.
  • Assist in organizing and archiving visual assets and marketing materials.
  • Other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in marketing, graphic design, communications, or a related field.
  • Acceptance and continuous enrollment in a graduate degree program at NCWU with good academic standing. Failure to meet these requirements will result in termination of the position.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (especially Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign) and/or Canva.
  • Strong understanding of design principles including layout, typography, color theory, and branding.
  • Knowledge and use of social media platforms for professional or marketing purposes.
  • Ability to work independently as well as collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Effective time management with the ability to handle multiple concurrent projects.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Strong attention to details, organization, and creative problem-solving.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Willingness to ask questions, seek feedback, and contribute proactively.

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Responsibilities include the ability to work flexible hours as needed to ensure the operation of Marketing and Communications Department.  While performing the duties of the Marketing Graduate Assistant, the employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, listen, answer telephones, operate standard office equipment, bend, kneel, crouch, climb ladders, and have the ability to lift 60 lbs as needed to complete tasks. While performing the duties of this position, is regularly required to communicate—both orally and in writing—with faculty, staff, students and the administration.  The employee’s daily work will frequently include interpretation of complex data, information and documents; analysis, and project management.  This highly-detailed work takes place in a multi-tasking environment with evolving deadlines and occasional interruptions.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate an ability to rise to the task while still maintaining a focus on customer service in interactions with faculty, staff, students, and administration.

Women’s Lacrosse Graduate Assistant

North Carolina Wesleyan University is seeking a highly motivated individual to serve as a Women’s Lacrosse Graduate Assistant.

This is a graduate assistant position that is open only to students who have completed their baccalaureate degree and are enrolled full-time in a masters level degree at North Carolina Wesleyan.  Interested applicants must apply to an NCWU graduate program and be pre-registered for full-time enrollment before they will be formally considered for this position.  Full-time enrollment consists of registration for at least six credits each academic semester and must begin by no later than the Fall 2025 term.  Continuous enrollment in good academic standing is required to maintain this position.

Specific work schedules will be negotiated with the supervisor (Lacrosse Coach), but they will not include more than 29 hours of employment (on average) each week.

BASIC FUNCTION

Assist in the administration, preparation, training, teaching, and coaching of a sports team. Teach proper skill and skill development to student-athletes.  Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

PRINCIPAL FUNCTIONAL RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coach sports team under the supervision of the head coach
  • Develop effective recruitment strategies and recruit prospective student athletes
  • Encourage and promote excellence in academics from student athletes
  • Coordinate and maintain athletic equipment
  • Organize and conduct practice sessions
  • Counsel and advise team members
  • Promote the sport program in the local community
  • Assist in conducting the sport program within NCAA, USA South, and NC Wesleyan policies and guidelines
  • Monitor academic performance, observance of NCAA rules, and health and safety of team members; provide Athletic Director with all academic information as requested
  • Self report any possible NCAA rules violation
  • Participate in annual continuing education programs regarding NCAA rules as assigned by the Director of Athletics
  • Assist head coach in recruiting prospective student-athletes
  • Provide input on player evaluation and other decisions concerning team operations
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Head Coach and/or Athletic Director

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Undergraduate degree required
  • Admission into an NC Wesleyan graduate program required
  • Coaching experience preferred
  • Ability to teach sport fundamentals and skills
  • Ability to manage and motivate players on and off the field
  • Demonstrated knowledge/mastery of computer skills using MS Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills

12-Month Position, unpaid; benefits detailed below

This is a graduate intern position that is open only to students who have completed their baccalaureate degree.  Interested applicants must apply to an NCWU graduate program and be pre-registered for full-time enrollment before they will be formally considered for this position.  Full-time enrollment consists of registration for at least six credits each academic semester and must begin by no later than the Summer term.  Continuous enrollment in good academic standing is required to maintain this position.

Specific work schedules will be negotiated with the supervisor, but they will not include more than 15 hours of employment (on average) each week.

BENEFITS INCLUDED:

  • 25% tuition scholarship for graduate study
  • Up to 20 hours of work per week
