From North to South: Snail Trails and Pollution Tales
This presentation explores the effects of different pollutants on freshwater snails. These studies were conducted at North Carolina Wesleyan University and the Scientific University of the South in Peru. Both studies investigated the impact of salinity, with additional pollutants specific to each location. At Wesleyan, Dr. Elias studied PFAS (industrial chemicals), acetaminophen and ibuprofen (pharmaceuticals). and microplastics (plastic pollutants). In Peru, the focus was on methomyl (pesticide). By assessing snail growth, mobility, and survival in these environments, Dr. Elias will provide insights that can help address pollution challenges more effectively in different regions.
