Title: Using Spider Web Discussion Methodology to Address Hot Button Topics In the IHE Classroom
Synopsis: What happens when the chaos of American and/or international society makes its way into your classroom? Sometimes, we, as instructors, are prepared to address the weighty issues that often impact the attitudes of students in the classroom. Sometimes, we are not. To aid faculty who face the continuous residual runoff of contentious cultural issues that find their way into the classroom, this presentation will address how Spider Web discussion methodology has been, and can be, juxtaposed with student learning objectives to give students a structured way to engage with controversial issues. The session will also share qualitative and quantitative results gathered from previous individuals who have used the methodology.
Join me in this discussion and for refreshments afterwards.

Join us as we begin our annual giving campaign to support NCWU students.
For over 45 years, Wesleyan University has hosted a fall fundraising event to support its academic programs and student initiatives. Originally known as A Day for Wesleyan, the campaign was rebranded in 2019 as the Wesleyan Promise Campaign under Interim President Dr. Evan D. Duff. This year, the campaign returns to its roots with a renewed focus on engaging alumni, corporate partners, and the broader community.
Campaign Timeline:
- Main Campaign:
Begins Monday, September 29, 2025
Ends Friday, October 31, 2025
Culminates after Homecoming Weekend (October 24–25)
Even after the official end date, the Office of University Advancement and Athletics will continue accepting pledged gifts and follow-ups. Donations received by December 31, 2025 from fall campaign solicitations will still count toward the campaign total.

Experience the Spirit of America in Music. Join the Tar River Orchestra for an unforgettable evening as we celebrate the American spirit through music, storytelling, and history. At the heart of the program is Ellis Island: The Dream of America by Peter Boyer—a powerful, multimedia tribute to the immigrant experience that helped shape our nation. This moving work blends orchestral music with live actors and projected historical images from the Ellis Island archives, bringing real immigrant stories to life on stage.
Also featured on the program:
Selections from The American Suite by Antonín Dvořák, capturing the energy and diversity of the New World through the eyes of a visiting composer. A special performance by Olivia Li, our Young Artist Competition winner, showcasing her talent in the first movement of Grieg’s Piano Concerto in A Minor. Don’t miss this inspiring evening that honors the dreams, struggles, and hope of generations who came to America in search of a better life.
