Joy Speller

Admissions Counselor - APS

What’s your Hometown?
I am originally from Greensboro, NC.

Why did you choose to work at NCWU?
NCWU gave me a foundation I still build on today. Coming back as an admissions counselor felt like a natural full circle moment. I know what it means to walk through the doors as a student, and now I get to help others find their way in. This place is personal to me, and that’s exactly why I chose it.

What School(s) did you attend and degree(s) earned?
I am an alumna of North Carolina Wesleyan University with a degree in Sociology.

What’s your Favorite eastern NC activity?
The fall activities (pumpkin patches, state fair, apple picking, etc.) and fishing.

Other interesting fact about me:
I love painting and I’m currently learning how to speak Haitian Creole.

What’s your Tip(s) for incoming students?
Get connected early and stay connected. The relationships you build here with faculty, staff, and peers will carry you further than a GPA alone. Also, use every resource available to you. Ask for help before you need it, not after.

What’s your Tip(s) for applicants?
Don’t let the process intimidate you. Reach out and ask questions. That’s what we’re here for. Be honest about where you are and what you’re looking for, and we will assist you from there!

NCWU is the kind of place where you’re not just a number. You’ll know your professors by name, and they’ll know yours. If you’re looking for a close-knit community where people genuinely invest in your success, you’ll find that here. I’m living proof of it.
