Peer & Professional Tutoring Service
Peer and Professional tutoring helps students strengthen their understanding of course material, improve or maintain grades, and build the confidence and skills needed for long-term success.
Students who want to better understand their classes, raise their current grade in a class, or stay on track academically are encouraged to take advantage of tutoring. Both individual and group support are available through trained Peer Tutors and Professional Tutors.
Peer Tutors are students who have earned a 3.0 GPA or higher and received a B+ or better in the course they tutor. They have completed at least 24 credit hours (sophomore standing) and participate in training to effectively support other students. On average, 80% of students who use tutoring services earn a grade of C or better in the courses where they receive assistance.
Students may request a tutor by clicking the “Request a Tutor” link and submitting the online form. Requests are processed by COMPASS Center staff, and students should receive an email from their assigned tutor within 2–3 working days to schedule a session. If a tutor does not make contact, students should call 252-985-5275.
To prepare for a tutoring session, students should read assigned chapters, attempt homework or drafts in advance, and bring their syllabus, notes, textbooks, quizzes, and specific questions. Tutoring is designed to provide guidance and skill development; tutors will not complete assignments for students but will help them build the tools needed to succeed independently.

Math & Tech Lab
The Math Lab is a dedicated service designed specifically to help students strengthen their math skills at all levels. Whether students want to refresh foundational skills or improve their current grade, the Math Lab provides personalized support to build confidence and mastery in mathematics.
The Tech Lab assists with technology and CIS-related questions. Together, these services provide students with the tools they need to succeed academically and prepare for future goals.

What is Tutoring and how can it help me?
Would you like to better understand your course material? Are you dissatisfied with your current grade? Do you want to maintain or improve your course grade? If you answered “yes” to any of these questions then tutoring may be the answer for you! Tutoring is a FREE service offered to ALL North Carolina Wesleyan University students. The Student Success Center offers both individual and group assistance by trained Peer Tutors and/or Professional Tutors.
Who are Peer/Professional Tutors?
Peer Tutor
A Peer Tutor is a student who has earned a GPA of 3.0 or better and has received a B+ or better in the course for which they are providing assistance. Peer Tutors have earned at least 24 credit hours (sophomore standing). Peer Tutors go through training and developmental activities that will better prepare them to help you achieve your goals!
FACT: An average of 80% of all students who utilized tutorial services earned a grade of C or better for the courses in which they received assistance.
Professional Tutor
A Professional Tutor is a community member with a bachelor’s degree (master’s degree preferred) in the specific subject that they are tutoring. Professional Tutors work in the field of their degree.
FACT: Faculty often recommend Peer Tutors to provide assistance in a subject.
How do I sign up for a tutor?
Click on the “Request a Tutor” link above, complete the request, and submit it electronically. Your tutor request will be processed by Student Success Center staff and you will be assigned a tutor. You should hear from your tutor within 2-3 days.
What should I expect when I have completed the Online Request for Tutoring?
You should expect an e-mail from your tutor within 2-3 working days of receipt of your request. Within that email, your tutor will conveniently schedule an appointment, time, and location-based on both of your time commitments. If your tutor does not contact you, please stop by the Student Success Center or contact the Coordinator of Academic Support Services at x5275.
What can I do to be prepared for our session?
You will want to do the following in preparation for working with your tutor:
- Read the chapters in your textbook(s) before coming to your session.
- Do as much of the homework as you can prior to your session. This means working on your math problems, creating an outline of the paper you are writing, etc.
- Bring your syllabus, class notes, textbook(s), quizzes, and other assignments with you to your session.
- Prepare a list of questions concerning the material in which you would like assistance.
